i know nothing about southeastasian cinema. all i've seen are the two lino brocka movies criterion have put out (one on tcm in the middle of the night, which was interrupted by an emergency broadcast system test) and norte by lav diaz. but honestly i know nothing about cinema in general, all i can say is everyone in this movie is a bastard and i'm not sure that is intentional but i love it for that. maybe in sri lanka its clear that victor is the hero, but his friends laying into him the entire time suggest otherwise. they're hardly heroes themselves, though; i especially loved the scene at the end with the voyeuristic communist abandoned during his speech by all except a cow pulling a cart. are anton and his crew the villains? cyril and his sexist family? i'm only rooting for helen and francis, and by the end one is dead and the other is alone, just as everyone knew she would be
same problem as with festen though. this film was made. how can i have so little to say? how stupid am i? i should watch satyajit ray already
